"The richest values of wilderness lie not in the days of Daniel Boone, nor even in the present, but rather in the future."
Aldo Leopold
Wilderness Groups

Wilderness, and the protection of wild lands for people and animals and for generations to come is, after all, about people. The wilderness movement began with the voices of people speaking out for the preservation of treasured places. The environmental movement grew out of the successful grassroots organizing of the wilderness movement. And in a democracy, where public opinion is taken into account in a deliberative and open process, peoples’ voices matter very much.

There are many ways for you to show your support for wilderness. The most important perhaps is to get involved in protecting wild places you know.  In the process, you will learn so much – about wild nature, about conservation politics, about your neighbors.

Use this map to find out where there are local and regional wilderness groups and check their website or give a call to see how you can help!

If there currently is no wilderness campaign going on in your state, check into the activities of groups listed on the Partner and Resources pages of this website.  Many of these organizations have local chapters.

You’ll be glad you did!
